Gore – more than trouts & guitars
Gore is more than just a town you pass when you’re on State Highway 1 heading as far South as you can go. It is steeped in history and is settled in some of the most stunning natural surroundings in Southland. Located 64 kilometres northeast of Invercargill and 70 km west of Balclutha, the district of Gore is home to around 12, 400 residents. It’s well worth a stop over if you are on the travelling path, and equally worth being put on your list as a destination for day trips while exploring Southland. We’ll be visiting Gore District more over the coming months and we’ll explore a little deeper.
Today’s feature is the Flemings ‘Creamoata Mill’, whose brand of porridge was once thought of as the nation’s breakfast. The business’ production of its products is now based in Australia but to this day ‘Sgt Dan Stockfoods Ltd’ still remains. The building has a Category I listing with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
