Close Game – Southland Stags
With a history dating back to it’s foundation in 1887, Southland is a proud and passionate rugby province. Southland is off course home to the Southland Stags whose maroon colours are donned by not only the players but also the loyal fans with pride. With more than 50 Southlanders having played for the New Zealand All Blacks, it appears there is something in the soil down here that is vital for producing great rugby players – passion, determination and a deep seeded belief in team mates is also in abundance. Add the before mentioned vocal and loyal fans to the mix and you have a recipe for a sport that can make the 80 minutes seem like a life time yet at the same time goes by in a flash. Last minute tries and conversions can swing a game either way, especially a close one like the Southland Stags v Northland match on September 13th, 2014 – it had the fans on the edge of their seats the entire time. There really wasn’t much in it at the end but with a sigh of relief and a mighty roar, the Southland Stags snatched a win of 36 – 34 in the closing minutes of what can only be described as a thrilling game. As a celebration we thought we’d let the pictures ‘speak a thousand words’ this time … enjoy!
